Over the Spring of 2021, we were proud to collaborate with Murata Manufacturing, an electronic capacitor manufacturing company based in Japan and local office in Carrollton. Riyaz Muhammad, Manager of Corporate Technology and Innovation at Murata, has been an unwavering supporter who believes in cultivating tomorrow’s engineers with real world problems and investing in STEM programs through UTDesign.

Under Murata’s mentorship, our final year computer science and computer engineering students built an Intelligent Occupancy Management system using air quality measurement that successfully predicts occupancy in a building through non-intrusive sensing technology. From enhanced cognitive function for students to simply creating healthier public spaces, intelligent air quality management created by our students can improve people’s lives. By being able to accurately predict occupancy, the air quality management system can also save money on HVAC and other resources costs by planning ahead.

Watch as Riyaz Muhammad, Manager, Corporate Technology and Innovation at Murata Manufacturing, highlight his experience with UTDesign capstone and how the students of the capstone project excelled in developing new products and technology for Murata Engineering.
