In June of 2018, our UTDesign Capstone team, Hip Hip Hooray, won a national first place award for an Internal Hip Distraction/Offloading Device, sponsored by Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children at the Capstone Design Conference (http://capstonedesigncommunity.org/), hosted at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York.

Led by Dr. Todd Polk, UTDesign Capstone Director for bioengineering and senior lecturer in bioengineering in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, a group of six bioengineering and mechanical undergraduate students created and built an improved solution for Legg-Calvé-Perthes, a rare childhood condition that affects the hip.

Biomedical engineering graduate Amreek Saini, one of the six involved in the project, said, “The ball of the femur begins to deteriorate. We came up with an internal device that separates the top of the femur from the socket at the hip, allowing for better healing and growth.”

Elated at the win, Dr. Polk commented, “When we go to these competitions with other schools, the work that our students have done really stands out due to the level of engineering and impact. Winning these competitions elevates UTD on the collegiate stage.”
