The purpose of the project is to build a grain size settling column to serve as a research and instructional device for UTD Geosciences. The function of the device is to collect the data needed to determine the grain size distribution of a sediment sample. A settling column typically consists of a large cylinder of water, fitted with a weighing apparatus at the bottom. A sediment sample is introduced at the top of the water column. As the sample settles at the bottom of the column, the mass accumulation data is recorded. The team’s solution incorporates a concentric, acrylic cylinder design with custom fabricated end cap, a weigh tray suspended from a commercial scale, a sample introduction system, and a free-standing frame. Significant accomplishments include a novel physical design with near 100% sample recapture and successful completion of experiments, resulting in the expected mass accumulation data of a known sample.
