At the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Manufacturing Science and Engineering Student Team Competition, the UTDesign Capstone program achieved notable success, securing both first and second place nationally.

The first-place award went to the project titled “Connector Insert Strike Machine,” sponsored by Amphenol Fiber Systems International. This project, developed by team members Jason Thomas, Tristan Linn, Hayden Ellis, Genesis Requena Guillen, Cameron Cash, and Dane Chronister, stood out for its technical excellence and innovative approach to solving industry-specific challenges. It involved retrofitting a pneumatic press to create mechanical connections, capable of turning separate components into permanent “staked” connectors.

In second place, the project “Long Wire Assembly Process Improvement,” sponsored by Cobalt Product Solutions, demonstrated outstanding problem-solving capabilities and advanced technical skills. Developed by team members Benjamin Sanguinetti, Ryan Shenefelt, Logan Bolling, Mitchell Mello, Erasmo Garcia, and Alex Vega Arcay, the project involved creating a semi-automated machine for feeding wires through conduit. This machine utilizes one operator and a robot fish tape feeding system, significantly reducing the manufacturing labor required.

The achievements at the ASME competition are a testament to the dedication and hard work of the students, as well as the support and guidance provided by the UTDesign faculty and staff. The program’s success at a prestigious national competition such as ASME highlights its role in shaping the next generation of engineering leaders and innovators.
